Women launch a petition against violence

İZMİR - Women members of the United Metal Workers Union of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) have opened a petition stand in front of Karşıyaka Pier of İzmir province against violence against women.
The United Metal Workers Union (BMİS) of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK) İzmir Branch issued a press statement in front of Karşıyaka Pier on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25. The women unfurled a banner reading, “No to violence against women” and the statement was read by Gülden Güneş, member of the Women's Commission of the BMİS İzmir Branch. Gülden emphasized that the violence against women increasingly continues in Turkey and she said, “328 women were killed in 2016 while 339 women were killed by men in the first 10 months of 2017. Just in October, 40 women were killed and 32 children were sexually abused.” Expressing that they want to an equal life with men at home, at work, in the streets and in every sphere of life, Gülden emphasized that they will keep their struggle. After the statement, women opened a petition stand with the motto, “Femicide must be stopped”. Women will send the signatures to the parliament.
