ISTANBUL- Syrian activists Orouba Barakat and her sister journalist Halla Barakat, who were killed in Istanbul’s Üsküdar district, had been threatened on social media and by phone. They had faced the threat, “We are Daesh, be silent or we will kill you.” Orouba had tried to open an association for Syrian women.
Syrian activist Orouba Barakat and journalist Halla Barakat, who were massacred in Istanbul's Üsküdar district, had been threatened ten days before they were killed. Orouba’s sister Maen Barakat said in her testimony to police that Orouba had joined the marches and actions against massacres in Syria and her family had faced threats for this reason. “My sister had tried to open ‘Women Without Borders Association’ to give education to Syrian women living in Turkey and to protect them against violence and oppression,” said Maen.
Maen told that Orouba had posted on Facebook against Syria and Daesh, “Four-Five months ago, someone called my sister. He spoke in an Arabic, Moroccan-Tunisian dialect and he threatened her, “We are Daesh, be silent or we will kill you.”
Furthermore, the murder suspect Ahmet Barakat is expected to be sent to the court after being questioned.
