DİYARBAKIR - Free Journalists Initiative (ÖGİ) has released its Report on the Media Violation in October, 2017. The report says that five of 11 journalists detained in October have been jailed, that four journalists were killed and three journalists were battered in October.

 

Free Journalists Initiative (ÖGİ) has released its Report on the Media Violation in October, 2017 in the building of Human Rights Association (İHD) Diyarbakır Branch. ÖGİ Spokesperson Hakkı Bolkan read the report prepared into Kurdish. ÖGİ member Zuhal Atlan read the report prepared into Turkish. Recalling that 2nd October is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Zuhal underlined that they have released the report within the context of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. Zuhal said, “By the end of October, our 171 colleagues are being held under the most serious rights violations in the prison. Turkey is the country and state that hold the most journalists in prison in the world.”

 

Titles in the report released by the ÖGİ are as follows;

 

*171 journalists are behind bars

 

*14 journalists are in custody

 

*Lawsuits were opened against 31 journalists

 

*66 journalists were tried

 

*11 journalists were released

 

*5 journalists were jailed

 

*11 journalists were sentenced to prison. The 11 journalists were sentenced totally 10 years, four months and 10 days in prison.

 

*3 journalists were battered

 

*1 journalist was fired

 

*3 books were banned

 

*Access to the website of Özgürlükçü Demokrasî Newspaper were blocked for 44th time

 

*4 journalists were killed in the world
